A Full-Time Librarian: Creating Enthusiastic Readers!

The Glencoe School Foundation funds 100% of the salary cost for Emma, the school's beloved librarian.

Emma can be found at just about every Glencoe event (Storybook Parade, the Glencoe Auction, Harvest Festival), and most Glencoe parents can't imagine the school without her infectious enthusiasm for reading, her environmental stewardship, and her exuberant love of children.

Encouraging a Love of Books
Emma's most important job is to encourage a love of reading. She does this by:

  • Helping children with their reading
  • Matching each child with the perfect book
  • Coming up with innovative "games" that teach students how to use the library
  • Working with Readers' Mountain to motivate students and classrooms to read

Emma tries to instill in kids a sense of responsibility for books that she hopes will "filter on into everyday living."

A Rich Environment
Emma tries to create a rich environment in the library by displaying interesting items, including:

  • two hamsters (Domino and Chewbacca)
  • walking sticks
  • a bird nest collection
  • sticks chewed on by beavers
  • a skull collection

The ever-evolving array of objects stimulate the kids' curiosity. When they ask the inevitable questions, Emma helps them find books to find the answers.

Hours and Events
Children and parents can come into the library between 7:30 and 3:15 on all school days.

Preschool storytime, a way for younger children to get familiar with the library, takes place every Thursday morning between 8:10 and 8:25 a.m.

How You Can Help
Emma can always use help from parents shelving, mending or tidying up. Recycling occurs on Friday mornings.

Would you like to contribute a book? Many parents do so in honor of their child's birthday or a special occasion. Contribute a favorite or find some suggestions from
Emma's Wish List.
